Elza Herring, rancher
Elza A. Herring, a retired rancher and horse trainer, died Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital of Emphysema. He was 77 and had lived at Lewiston 24 years.
He was born May 9, 1901, at Cavendish, Idaho, to Alva and Hyla Herring and moved with his parents to Canada in 1914. He worked on the family farm there 10 years before moving to Orofino in 1924 to work as a logger, farmer and horse trainer.
He married Mary Belle Rugg in Canada in 1921. She died in 1934. He later married Florence Court at Clarkston. Their marriage ended in divorce.
In 1955, Herring moved from eastern Oregon to Lewiston. He had resided at 616 Warner Ave. until his death.
He is survived by four daughters, Elaine Loechel and Elva Keagy of Denver, Colo., Bernetta Smith of Coeur d'Alene and Irma Mann of Termo, Calif, five sons, Delbert and Keith of Lewiston, Arthur and Albert of Glendale, Ariz., and Clyde of Texas; three sisters, Elva Tschabold, Edna Graham and Muriel Jarrett all of Canada, and 24 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Malcom's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Smith of the Orchards Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery, Lenore.
